A Challenging Morning in Houston: Lessons in Resilience. Chapter 8
The morning of July 11th began with an adventure - repairing our air conditioning system. A recent storm had knocked out the unit at our facility, but fortunately, I was able to coordinate with a dedicated HVAC company to address the issue quickly. As the technicians worked, it became clear we might need additional upgrades to optimize ventilation across the building. For now, they got our office AC running again and even restored the system in our warehouse - a double win!

At the time, many Houstonians were facing similar challenges. The energy grid was pushed to its limits, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity or air conditioning. In true Houston spirit, the community came together to help each other. Our friends at Houston Cares Animal Rescue were a shining example of this generosity. They transported dogs and cats from homes without AC to places where power and cooling had been restored. Some volunteers even took turns driving the animals around in air-conditioned cars.

Meanwhile, the city focused on cleaning up storm debris and assessing tree safety to ensure they remained stable. Utility crews worked to repair power lines, which in some areas caused additional outages. Crews also pumped water from underground parking garages, and in our neighborhood, a sinkhole required urgent inspection to prevent further road collapse.

By this morning, our team was fully operational again. Despite the challenges, we managed to hold a virtual meeting even without internet access in the office. Using the unlimited data plan on my company phone, I set up a hotspot—a simple but critical workaround that kept us connected and functional. I’m incredibly proud of how we navigated these challenges. Our team stayed united, found creative solutions, and remained operational throughout the ordeal. It’s a testament to our resilience and the strength we have when we work together. Here’s to more successful days—and hopefully cooler ones ahead!
