During the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant, all components must meet the highest technical standards. Since 2005, RWE Nuclear GmbH had been using a custom-made membrane keyboard – a crucial part of a safety-critical system controlling the fuel assembly loading machine.
After many years of flawless operation, one of the keyboards partially failed. Buying a new one was not an option: "The keyboard is no longer produced. An alternative part might require approval from authorities."
Replacing it would have meant considerable effort, delays, and regulatory hurdles.
